"Is your baby having colic?" Blog # 98

The entry below is a useful blog on colic and ways to help alleviate constant unexplained crying.

A benefit of Dunstan Baby Language is identifying the sounds for upper and lower wind which is often associated with causing colic.

"Whenever a baby cries non-stop, many parents associate it with colic, or sometimes, they call it the baby is having wind in his/her stomach. This is true and not true. Baby can cry for any reason that you can imagine under the sun. Basically, when they feel uncomfortable, they will show it through their only way of emotional out burst, and that is crying. And because of that, we parents must take a step back and observe the symptoms why the baby is crying. I will recommend that you actually get hold of the Dunstan Baby language. My wife and I had watched it and I must say, it had helped us a lot. Once we know what's our baby trying to tell us, we were able to respond more accurately to his need."

Click here to read the entire post.

I do. I’m actually looking forward to my baby’s cries. Only after i’ve got my hands on this amazing product, founded by Priscilla Dunstan.

When i was still heavily pregnant, another pregnant friend of mine introduced this product to me and my first thought was, “Okay, it’s just another commercialized baby product in the baby-money-making market.” Boy, I was so wrong! I read articles and books about pregnancy and handling techniques of newborn but today, things proved that those knowledge doesn’t help much in the actual hands-on practice when i have my baby girl in my hands. Things just go crazy when you can’t seem to soothe a crying baby! You end up crying together with the baby and the end result? A chaotic situation for the dad to handle. Ha ha!"

To read the rest of the post simply click here.

Thank you Helen from the Dunstan Baby Team!

Our very own Sarah Alexander was part of the interview.

CTVBC .CAThu Mar. 20 2008 17:36:42
Some parents are trying out a new technique in the hopes of unlocking the meaning behind their infant's cry. "Dunstan baby language is a language that Priscilla Dunstan, from Australia, has deciphered the different sounds that infants make, so from 0 to 3 months," said Sarah Alexander, a Registered Nurse and practitioner of Dunstan Baby Language.

Alexander teaches Dunstan baby language in the Lower Mainland and says there are five distinctive sounds that babies make to communicate with their parents."The 'neh' or the 'nah' sound and it is based on the sucking reflex so the tongue hits the roof of the mouth," she said.

And when babies are tired, their mouth will make an oval shape and they will make the 'owh' sound. If they have upper abdominal gas, that is when the parent can try burping them. Dunstan baby language also identifies lower abdominal pain. When babies are uncomfortable, they'll make an 'heh' sound.

"So it is basically understanding what the baby is saying prior to that hysterical crying point and then hopefully they will not get there," said Alexander.

Liz Weir has been using Dunstan Baby Language with her newborn, Mason.

"It has been very calming because being able to understand what he needs gives myself and my husband a little bit more confidence," she said.

And the techniques appear to be working.

"To be able to communicate with an infant at this age was unheard of for so long ... see ... he needs to burp," she said.

Tammy from the Dunstan Baby Team

New Zealand takes a CLOSE UP look at Dunstan Baby Language

Close Up - New Zealand's highest rating current affairs programme presented an in depth feature on the Dunstan Baby Language DVD.

Close Up interviewed two New Zealand mothers who 'road tested' the Dunstan Baby Language with their new babies. One of the mothers said 'it saved her life'. She was amazed that once she learned what to listen for, she could hear babies 'talking' everywhere, "When I was at The Palms Shopping Mall I could hear all these other babies saying the Dunstan sounds".

Another mother who road tested the DVD found it harder to use the System. "Long periods of unexplained crying can be overwhelming," observes Dr. Maureen O'Brien, child psychologist and Director of Education for Dunstan Baby. "Anything which encourages parents to stop, take a deep breath and listen to what their baby is trying to communicate is a positive."

It is always great when mothers and fathers share their experience from learning the Dunstan System.

"Sometimes it takes parents by surprise to learn what their babies actually need," explains Ellesha Kirby, Marketing Director of Dunstan Baby, and features in the Close Up report. "Burping is a perfect example - we just don’t expect babies to need to burp as much as many do. We forget that they lie flat on their backs all day which makes it hard for them to get the air up themselves. When parents know what to listen for it can make all the difference to help settle their baby".

J from the Dunstan Baby Team

During the last week of November we had the privilege of presenting the Dunstan System at the annual Zero-to-Three conference in Orlando, Florida. Zero-to-Three is the National Center for Infants, Toddlers and Families and is a key provider of training, support and leadership for Professionals working in this arena.

Dunstan Baby Director of Education, Dr Maureen O’Brien and Marketing Director Ellesha Kirby led a presentation to approximately 200 delegates to review the Language – its origins, research and implications for empowering families. The session received a warm reception, with many Professionals expressing their excitement about the potential of the Dunstan System.

The NTI was a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness of the Dunstan System and begin a dialogue about the tremendous benefits it holds for mothers, fathers and infants. We look forward to exploring future opportunities to partner with Professionals to take our research in new directions.

We also always look forward to hearing Health Care Professionals' experience of the system - so please share your thoughts!

At the start of August, Dunstan Baby attended the ABA's fantastic Expo and Conference "Hot Milk" in Melbourne. Many health care professionals attended our presentation which delivered the five ‘words’ and how Dunstan Baby Language can assist in the bonding between mothers and their babies.

It was invaluable hearing the feedback from Health Care Professionals, many of whom are already recommending the System, so their comments provided valuable insights.

The Australian Breastfeeding Association has now kindly hosted us in 3 cities around Australia so we'd like to thank them for inviting us to be part of the conferences – it's been very enjoyable!
